Krispy Kreme is in the process of expanding its footprint in North Carolina and giving its corporate offices a modern makeover. The 82-year-old company recently renovated and consolidated its global headquarters in Winston-Salem and opened a new Global Product & Innovation Center in Charlotte. Both locations include office workspaces, plus full retail areas with training and research and development capabilities.
RTM Engineering Consultants provided engineering and design of the mechanical, electrical, plumbing, and fire protection systems for both projects.
At its Winston-Salem headquarters, the company’s goal was to update its workspace and align it with its current brand vision. RTM managed a full gut and remodel of the four-story, 26,488-square-foot building. The RTM team was able to utilize the existing air handling unit (AHU) system and reconfigure the ductwork layout to meet variable air volume (VAV) zoning requirements.
Krispy Kreme plans to relocate corporate operations to its new 26,766-squre-foot Charlotte location. The building will also feature a test kitchen that will be open to the public as a retail concept space. The existing structure imposed some limitations on the scope of the mechanical and electrical systems, but RTM devised creative engineering and design solutions to balance energy- and cost-efficiency during the build-out.
After evaluating the existing roof structure, RTM determined that the single-zone roof top unit (RTUs) were nearing the last 20% of their life expectancy. The team took a proactive approach and replaced all of the RTUs with new units. RTM implemented a simple HVAC system to minimize costs, as well as a single central electrical room to support new service with main distribution, and modified sprinklers and fire alarms to fit the new space plan.
