The first step of any lighting design project is to understand the owner’s goals and requirements for the space. Outlining the determining factors from construction cost, to energy efficiency and sustainability goals, as well as safety and security requirements can play a critical role in the success of the project. Failure to draft and review these project requirements upfront can result in costly redesigns, and/or construction delays.
Lighting Levels
Because most lighting fixtures have an IES computer file that can be used with lighting software, this makes it easier to model and calculate lighting levels for particular fixtures. When designing using the IES modeling software, a lighting professional should use a fixture’s maintained lumens instead of initial lumens. Although the initial lumens value is much higher, lighting output in any fixture will decrease over time, so the maintained value will act as a more accurate prediction for the output throughout the lifespan of that fixture. It is important that the IES file being used matches the configuration and options used for each lighting fixture.
