RTM provided electrical engineering design for the expansion and rebranding of the Blackhawks Ice Center, formerly known as Fifth Third Arena. This transformative renovation doubles the facility’s size and establishes it as a premier Midwest destination for hockey, community programs, and events.

The project added two new ice sheets—bringing the total to four—including a 2,000-seat arena that will serve as the new home for the Chicago Steel. Designed to host professional, youth, and recreational hockey as well as community and private events, the expansion is expected to attract 1.5 million annual visitors to the growing sports and entertainment district just south of the United Center.

RTM’s electrical design supports the arena’s enhanced functionality and visitor experience, including power distribution for new ice systems, lighting for event and hospitality spaces, and infrastructure for multimedia and food service areas. The expanded facility also incorporates Centennial Hall, the Blackhawks’ team hall of fame, along with new hospitality spaces such as Rocky’s Table & Tap, Raise the Cup Café, The Patio, The Calder Room, and the Chicago Steel Lounge.

Beyond its role as a training facility, the Ice Center now serves as a dynamic, community-centered venue offering restaurant-quality dining, flexible event spaces, and year-round opportunities for engagement, blending professional athletics with community connection.
