The LeConte Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) is a cutting-edge energy storage project located in Imperial County, Calexico, California. With a capacity of 125,000 kW, the system used advanced lithium-ion technology to store and release electricity, making it a vital component in enhancing grid stability and optimizing renewable energy integration. The project was designed primarily for renewables capacity firming and renewable energy time shifting, which helped smooth out the intermittent nature of renewable power generation, like solar and wind.
The BESS, together with the 175 MW Centinela PV Solar System located next door, helped stabilize and decarbonize the existing utility power grid system. This strategic co-location with the Centinela Solar Energy Station created a seamless connection between solar power production and energy storage, ensuring more reliable and efficient energy delivery.
RTM provided electrical engineering services for the LeConte Battery Energy Storage System. The team’s expertise played a critical role in the design and implementation of the project, ensuring that all technical and regulatory requirements were met. By supporting the integration of the storage system with the existing infrastructure at Centinela, RTM helped maximize the project’s potential to support California’s clean energy goals. The successful completion of this energy storage project marked a significant step forward in building a more resilient and sustainable energy grid.
