The Palm Springs Unified School District saw the need to improve and expand the Agua Caliente Elementary School to support the area’s growing population. A feasibility study determined that reconstructing the campus with new buildings would be the most cost effective and efficient solution to best serve the community. Reconstructing also allowed Baker Nowicki Design Studio to draw heavily from Desert Modernism, an architectural style that the Palm Springs area is known for, attracting thousands of visitors every year. The result is a $40 million campus of brand new single and two-story buildings, which prominently feature full height glass walls, exposed structural steel, and concrete masonry unit shear walls, all seismically designed for the area’s high risk of earthquakes.
