The University of Chicago contracted RTM to perform a feasibility study and subsequent MEP design of a new high tech computer laboratory for The John Crerar Library. The scope consisted of MEP, fire alarm, and fire protection engineering design services for new laboratories, offices, and a server training room.
RTM consulted in new lighting layouts to maintain the existing feel and look of the classical library while adding energy saving techniques in bi-level switching, energy efficient lamping, and low THD ballasting. Collaborating with the university staff, RTM accommodated the client’s exact power requirements for the new space, which included multiple monitors and PCs at each individual work station. The scope also consisted of consultation on the systems surrounding the server room, such as multiple racks, blade servers, and tower servers.
RTM designed A/C systems that supported the new heat loads from the computers and servers to create a well-designed space with efficient A/C and temperature management systems.
