RTM provided full mechanical, electrical, and plumbing engineering design services for the 76,000-square-foot expansion to the existing hospital. The hospital’s current infrastructure was not large enough to handle such a major addition, which made this a very complex project for the design team to solve. The campus steam, chilled water, and electrical system all had to be upgraded to allow for this expansion. This also included the major medical gases and vacuum systems. RTM’s previous experience with working with college campus central plants provided a working knowledge of how to handle this major addition, while also keeping the existing systems on-line. Keeping the patients comfortable and maintained during the construction was an absolute necessity.
Departments in the north addition include; the Hospital Laboratory, Oncology, ICU, Cardiac and Physical rehabilitation, and multiple doctor offices. The new addition has a dedicated boiler/chiller plant with capability of full operation with the existing central plant. The new central plant has two 90 HP gas/ fuel oil boilers and one 300 ton water cooler chiller. The plant is piped and spaced for an additional chiller and associated pumps. A new electrical service was installed for the entire facility with power feeds from two different utility substations with automatic changeover during power failure.
