RTM designed Irving Elementary School with simplicity in systems and controls, maintainability of equipment, sustainability and energy efficiency all as key concepts. Incorporated in the design were high-efficiency Energy Star products and low-wattage lighting design.

The project included a multi-purpose FEMA Safe Room which consisted of designing the MEP systems for the gymnasium space to double as a community safe room during severe weather. A 277/480 volt, gas-fired generator was installed as a requirement for the space.

The mechanical systems included a variable refrigerant volume (VRV) DX split system with heat pumps, DX with gas heat dedicated outside air units, and constant volume DX with gas heat rooftop units.

In order to provide more customized comfort for each space, the classrooms each included their own thermostat. Efficient daylight sensors were used in the entrance area of the building and classroom learning parks due to the extent of natural daylight available.

An uninterruptible power supply (UPS) was provided for the main data server equipment.
